At Labs4rescue we say "Save a BLACK Lab, have a friend for life!" Contributed by our friends at: Labs4rescue, Inc. P.O. Box 955 Killingworth, CT 06419 From a Dog's Point of View; 1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Regular separation from you will be painful and can even cause depression. Think before you buy me.
2. Give me time to understand what you want from me don't be impatient, short-tempered or irritable.
3. Place your trust in me and I will always trust you back, respect is earned not given as some sort of inalienable right.
4. Don't be angry with me for long, and don't lock me up as punishment. I am not capable of understanding why I am being locked up. I only know I have been rejected. You have your work, entertainment and friends, I only have you.
5. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your tone. You only have to look at my tail to know that.
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget. If that treatment is unjust or bad, it may spoil the special bond between us.
7. Please do not hit me. I cannot hit back, but I can bite and scratch and I don't ever want to feel the need to do that.
8. Before you tell me off, for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be wrong with me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food or I've been out in the sun too long, maybe my heart is getting old and weak, or maybe I'm just dog-tired.
9. Take care of me when I get old. You too will grow old and will also want care, love, and affection.
10. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say, I can't bear to watch or Let it happen in my absence. Everything is easier for me if you are there. Remember, irrespective of what you do, I will always love you.
A POEM TO MY FOSTER DOG: by Diane Morgan
I am the bridge between what was and what can be. I am the pathway to a new life. I am made of mush, because my heart melted when I saw you, matted and sore, limping, depressed, lonely, unwanted, afraid to love. For one little time you are mine. I will feed you with my own hand I will love you with my whole heart I will make you whole. I am made of steel. Because when the time comes, when you are well, and sleek, when your eyes shine, and your tail wags with joy Then comes the hard part. I will let you go--not without a tear, but without a regret. For you are safe forever-- A new dog needs me now
The Rescue Rainbow Bridge: Unlike most days at Rainbow Bridge, this day dawned cold and gray, damp as a swamp and as dismal as could be imagined. All of the recent arrivals had no idea what to think, as they had never experienced a day like this before. But the animals who had been waiting for their beloved people knew exactly what was going on and started to gather at the pathway leading to The Bridge to watch. It wasn't long before an elderly animal came into view, head hung low and tail dragging. The other animals, the ones who had been there for a while, knew what his story was right away, for they had seen this happen far too often. He approached slowly, obviously in great emotional pain, but with no sign of injury or illness. Unlike all of the other animals waiting at The Bridge, this animal had not been restored to youth and made healthy and vigorous again. As he walked toward The Bridge, he watched all of the other animals watching him. He knew he was out of place here and the sooner he could cross over, the happier he would be. But, alas, as he approached The Bridge, his way was barred by the appearance of an Angel who apologized, but told him that he would not be able to pass. Only those animals who were with their people could pass over Rainbow Bridge. With no place else to turn to, the elderly animal turned towards the fields before The Bridge and saw a group of other animals like himself, also elderly and infirm. They weren't playing, but rather simply lying on the green grass, forlornly staring out at the pathway leading to The Bridge. And so, he took his place among them, watching the pathway and waiting. One of the newest arrivals at The Bridge didn't understand what he had just witnessed and asked one of the animals that had been there for awhile to explain it to him. "You see, that poor animal was a rescue. He was turned in to rescue just as you see him now, an older animal with his fur graying and his eyes clouding. He never made it out of rescue and passed on with only the love of his rescuer to comfort him as he left his earthly existence. Because he had no family to give his love to, he has no one to escort him across The Bridge." The first animal thought about this for a minute and then asked, "So what will happen now?" As he was about to receive his answer, the clouds suddenly parted and the gloom lifted. Approaching The Bridge could be seen a single person and among the older animals, a whole group was suddenly bathed in a golden light and they were all young and healthy again, just as they were in the prime of life. "Watch, and see.", said the second animal. A second group of animals from those waiting came to the pathway and bowed low as the person neared. At each bowed head, the person offered a pat on the head or a scratch behind the ears. The newly restored animals fell into line and followed him towards The Bridge. They all crossed The Bridge together. "What happened?" "That was a rescuer. The animals you saw bowing in respect were those who found new homes because of his work. They will cross when their new families arrive. Those you saw restored were those who never found homes. When a rescuer arrives, they are allowed to perform one, final act of rescue. They are allowed to escort those poor animals that they couldn't place on earth across The Rainbow Bridge." "I think I like rescuer's", said the first animal. "So does GOD", was the reply.
Rainbow Bridge: Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who have been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
| "SAVING ONE LAB AT A TIME", that is our motto here at Love A Lab!! We are a family owned and operated rescue for Labrador Retrievers and Lab mixes. We live in a rural part of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. On our 7 sprawling acres, our rescues have plenty of space to play and socialize while getting into the wonders of the world; basically they are allowed to be dogs. But after a hard day of play they are allowed in the house to rest and get under my feet. All foster labs are treated as one of our family, until they leave to join their forever family. We have 4 beautiful Labs, one is a a PB (C.G.C) Yellow Lab named Bailey. Then we have our first shelter pup named Zach, who is a Black Lab mix. Then we have our Lab/ Hound mix, shelter pup named Ellie Mae, and bringing up the rear is our PB (C.G.C) Chocolate Lab named Jessie James. We are all about animal preservation and safety for our Labs. Should you choose to adopt one of our precious foster Labs feel free to fill out our application and email it back to us for consideration. Your contributions to this cause are greatly appreciated. We are continually trying to grow our network of saving these precious animals from the doom that awaits them at these high kill shelters. Please meet our furkids: BAILEY: ZACH: ELLIE MAE: JESSIE JAMES: What is a Labrador Retriever? Labradors belong to the sporting group of breeds. Adult Labs usually weigh in at about 70-90 pds and have a lifespan of about 12-14 yrs. Their short, dense coat is either Black, Yellow in variation and Chocolate (Brown) and is shed seasonally. For more information go to www.akc.org or http://www.k9web.com/dog-faqs/breeds/labradors.html Where do our dogs come from? Labs are among the most popular breeds which results in a large number of them in our shelters. We work with local high kill shelters and rescue the labs when they are put on "death row" and have no chance left to be adopted out. We bring them into our home and they are treated as family and worked with on social behavior, housetraining and crate training. How do I get a rescued Lab? To adopt one of our Lab's, we require a completed adoption application and contract, vet references, a home visit and an adoption fee. Once you complete the application, we would like you to meet the dog/pup here at our home, after that point if you decide this is the lab for you, then we will do a "home visit" at your home, it is important for us to know these labs are going to permanent, loving homes. We will also contact your vet for a reference. Labs are very social dogs who want and need to be part of your lives, not tied to a tree or in an outside kennel looking in at all the fun. What if it doesn't work out? We will evaluate each lab and it's adoptive home to ensure the adoption is a good match, we give a 2 week trial period where the lab lives with you, if by chance this is not the dog for you then we get the lab back and you get your full adoption fee back. Of course if you would like to try another one of our rescues you are free to do this. Also in our contract it is stated that if later on down the road you can't keep the lab, for what ever reasons, then it must come back to us at the rescue with NO refund of the adoption fee.
